Talk to the export teamTo start a coconut water brand, you need four things in place before anything reaches a shelf: a clear product position, a manufacturer that fills fresh coconut water into Tetra Pak cartons at origin, a carton format that suits your channel, and a first order sized to your manufacturer's minimums. Most new US brands do not own a factory. They work with a coconut water co-packer who sources the nuts, processes and fills the water, prints the carton with the brand's artwork and handles export documents, whether you call it private label or white label coconut water. Done well, a new brand can move from first brief to a shipped container in 10 to 18 weeks, plus about five to seven weeks of ocean freight to a US port. This guide walks through each decision in the order you will make it.
Key takeaways
- Choose your position first (pure, organic, Fairtrade, single-origin or a dairy-free coconut beverage), because it decides which supplier and certifications you need.
- Coconut water filled where the coconuts grow, without reconstitution, gives a cleaner label, a fresher taste and 18 months of ambient shelf life.
- Each printed carton design carries a print MOQ of 79,000 to 359,000 cartons, so your first order depends on the carton you choose.
- Allow 10 to 18 weeks from brief to shipment: carton lead times are 6–8 weeks for some sizes and 12–14 weeks for others.
- For the US, coconut water is a low-acid food, so check your supplier's FDA canning registration and process filings, and that it can support your FSVP file.
Decide what your coconut water stands for
Coconut water is a crowded shelf, and the brands that last stand for something specific. Before you speak to manufacturers, decide which claim your brand will own, because each claim changes what you need from your supplier.
Brand position | What it promises the shopper |
100% pure | Nothing added, just coconut water |
Organic | Grown without synthetic inputs |
Premium biodynamic | The strictest organic farming standard |
Ethical | Fair prices for farmers |
Kosher | Suitable for kosher-observant shoppers, a common US retail request |
Single origin | A named place, a recognizable taste |
Dairy-free drink | A creamy, plant-based drink with no dairy or soy |
Convenience or kids | Easy, portion-sized hydration |
You can combine positions, for example organic and Fairtrade single-origin coconut water, as long as one supplier holds every certification you plan to print.
Choose your product: natural coconut water or coconut beverage
CBL fills two coconut drinks in Tetra Pak cartons for private label. Many brands launch with natural coconut water, then add a ready-to-drink coconut beverage under the same brand, using the same cartons, artwork process and certifications.
What it is | 100% coconut water from young coconuts | A ready-to-drink coconut beverage, dairy-free and soy-free, with no fruit juice added |
Label story | Single ingredient, no added sugar or preservatives | Smooth, creamy, everyday dairy alternative |
Typical shopper | Health, sports and wellness | Dairy-free shoppers, cafés and families |
Grades | Conventional, organic, Fairtrade, Naturland, Demeter | Conventional, organic, Fairtrade, Naturland, Demeter |
Shelf life | 18 months ambient | 18 months ambient |
Sourcing: why origin and filling at source matter
Coconut water starts to change flavor soon after the nut is opened. The best coconut water is extracted from young coconuts and processed close to the plantation, then filled into aseptic cartons straight away. Some coconut water on the market is made from concentrate: the water is concentrated at origin, shipped, then diluted again before packing. That route can cost less but often tastes flatter and needs a different ingredient declaration.
CBL fills coconut water at source in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Sri Lanka harvests coconuts year-round, and our plantations sit about 20 km from the facility, so nuts reach processing quickly. Running two origins also protects your supply if one country has a poor harvest or a shipping disruption. From Colombo, ocean freight to US East and West Coast ports takes roughly five to seven weeks, depending on routing.
CBL natural coconut water specification
Parameter | Specification |
Origin | Sri Lanka and Indonesia, filled at source |
Ingredients | 100% coconut water; no added sugar or preservatives |
Brix (natural sugars) | 4.5–6.5 °Bx |
pH | 4.5–5.5 |
Fat | Below 0.5% |
Shelf life | 18 months ambient, unopened, no refrigeration |
Testing | Every batch tested in-house; certificate of analysis with every shipment |
Ask any supplier you shortlist for the same table. If they cannot state Brix and pH ranges or send a batch certificate of analysis, the taste of your product will drift from one order to the next.
How to choose a coconut water co-packer
A coconut water co-packer (also called an OEM or contract manufacturer) makes and packs the product under your brand. The right partner saves you from building a factory; the wrong one costs you a season. Use this checklist when you compare suppliers:
- Fills at origin on its own lines. Ask whether the company processes and fills in its own facility or passes work to third-party fillers. Every handover is a traceability gap.
- High food safety grade. Look for BRCGS (CBL holds grade AA++) or FSSC 22000. Many retailers will not list a product without one.
- Certifications that transfer to your label. Organic, Demeter, Fairtrade, Kosher and Halal claims must be held by the manufacturer. Check they can be used on your pack without a separate audit.
- The formats you need. Confirm the supplier runs your chosen carton size and closure, not only similar ones.
- Batch-actual documentation. A certificate of analysis should show the results of your batch, not typical values.
- US import documents. Ask for FDA food facility registration, FDA Food Canning Establishment (FCE) registration and process filings (SID) for aseptic low-acid products such as coconut water, documents for your Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP), and a USDA organic import certificate for organic shipments.
- Artwork and label compliance support. A good co-packer checks your label against the rules of your market before print.
- Samples before commitment. You should taste the product in its real carton before you sign an order.
Our private label team can walk you through each point against your brief. The section on why brands choose CBL, further down, sets out our answers.
Choosing your carton format
Aseptic Tetra Pak cartons are the standard pack for ambient coconut water: they keep it for 18 months with no preservatives or refrigeration, and their rectangular shape packs efficiently into containers. We explain how the carton works in our aseptic Tetra Pak coconut milk guide.
CBL fills cartons in two countries, and each filling line runs its own sizes and closures. Choose by sales channel first, then by origin:
Format | Filled in | Closure | Best for |
65 ml Tetra Classic Aseptic Slim | Indonesia | Tear-open | Sampling, shots, kids' multipacks |
200 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Base | Sri Lanka | No cap | Single serves, multipacks, convenience |
200 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Edge | Indonesia | Straw hole or cap | Lunchboxes, kids, on the go |
250 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Base | Sri Lanka | No cap | Impulse shelves, single serves |
250 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Edge | Indonesia | Straw hole or cap | School, on the go, resealable single serve |
330 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Base | Sri Lanka | No cap | Gyms, sports and convenience stores |
500 ml Tetra Brik Aseptic Base | Sri Lanka | Tethered cap | Grocery, everyday household use |
1 L Tetra Brik Aseptic Base | Sri Lanka | Tethered cap | Family packs, cafés and foodservice |
Three points help most first-time brands decide:
- Small packs build trial, large packs build margin. A 200 ml or 250 ml carton lets shoppers try your brand at a low price, but packaging costs more per liter. A 1 L carton gives the lowest cost per liter.
- Choose a cap if shoppers will drink it in more than one go. The 500 ml and 1 L Sri Lankan cartons have tethered caps. The US has no federal tethered-cap rule, but the same carton is ready if you later sell into the EU, where tethered caps are required. Indonesia offers 200 ml and 250 ml with a cap.
- Straws suit children's and lunchbox ranges. The 200 ml and 250 ml straw-hole cartons are filled in Indonesia.
See every size and closure on our Tetra Pak natural coconut water page.
MOQs and lead times: what to plan for your first order
Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the question every new brand asks first. For coconut water in cartons, there are two kinds of minimum, and it helps to know which one applies to you.
Print MOQ and lead time. A carton printed with your design needs its own run of printed paperboard, so each design carries a minimum number of cartons. This is set by carton printing, not by the filling line. Lead time also depends on the carton:
Carton | Filled in | Print MOQ per design (cartons) | Lead time | Coconut water per print run |
65 ml, classic | Indonesia | 1,060,000 | 6–8 weeks | |
200 ml, no cap | Sri Lanka | 335,000 | 6–8 weeks | about 67,000 L |
250 ml, no cap | Sri Lanka | 257,000 | 12–14 weeks | about 64,250 L |
330 ml, no cap | Sri Lanka | 177,000 | 12–14 weeks | about 58,400 L |
500 ml, tethered cap | Sri Lanka | 114,000 | 6–7 weeks | about 57,000 L |
1 L, tethered cap | Sri Lanka | 79,000 | 6–8 weeks | about 79,000 L |
200 ml, straw hole or cap | Indonesia | 359,000 | 6–8 weeks | about 71,800 L |
250 ml, straw hole or cap | Indonesia | 307,000 | 12–14 weeks | about 76,750 L |
Order MOQ. For existing formulations, CBL can start from a single pallet, so you can test a market before committing to a full container, then scale up to full container loads as demand grows. Discuss with our team which formats and designs qualify.
What drives your price per carton:
- Carton size and closure (tethered cap, straw hole or standard)
- Certification grade: conventional, organic, Fairtrade, Naturland or Demeter
- Number of designs and languages, since each design is a separate print run
- Order volume and how often you reorder
- Incoterm and destination port, for example FOB Colombo versus CIF Los Angeles or New York
Certifications and claims you can put on the pack
Certification marks often earn the listing. US natural and organic retailers look for the USDA Organic seal, many mainstream and club buyers ask for Kosher, and Fairtrade helps in natural channels. Your brand can only print a mark that your manufacturer holds. For coconut water, CBL holds organic (USDA, EU, JAS and Canada), Demeter, Naturland, Fairtrade, Halal and Kosher, plus monkey-free harvesting, and each transfers to your private label without a separate audit. See every certificate on our certifications page.
Artwork and labeling for private label coconut water
You are welcome to submit your own artwork or a detailed design brief. Our team will adapt and refine it, then position it precisely on your chosen carton so it looks right on shelf and prints cleanly. A one-page PDF or an email with your brand guidelines is enough to start.
Our artwork process has four steps:
- Artwork brief. You share brand colors, fonts, logo files, target market, label languages, pack size and the certification marks you plan to use.
- Artwork development. Our studio applies your design to the exact Tetra Pak dieline for your format, checking bleed, safe areas and the placement of certification logos.
- Compliance review. We review the label against the rules of your target market, including the nutrition panel format, net contents, legal text and how each certification mark may be used.
- Print approval. Once you sign off, printing plates are ordered and your production slot is confirmed.
For the US market, your carton will need at least:
- A statement of identity, such as "100% coconut water", and an ingredients list if anything is added
- Net contents in both US customary units (fl oz) and metric units
- A Nutrition Facts panel in the current FDA format
- Country of origin (for example "Product of Sri Lanka"), storage instructions and a date code
- Name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor
- The USDA Organic seal and your certifier's statement, if the product is organic
Timeline: from brief to first container
For a new brand with a new printed carton, plan on 10 to 18 weeks from first brief to shipment, depending on the carton's lead time, then add ocean freight and US entry. Repeat orders are faster because your artwork is already approved.
Stage | Typical timing |
1. Brief | Day 1 |
2. Samples | Weeks 1–3 |
3. Quotation | Weeks 2–3 |
4. Artwork | Weeks 2–4 |
5. Carton printing and production | 6–8 weeks (200 ml, 1 L), 6–7 weeks (500 ml) or 12–14 weeks (250 ml, 330 ml) |
6. Shipment | After release |
7. Ocean freight and US entry | About 5–7 weeks |
Launch now
If launch date matters most, a 6–8 week carton (200 ml or 1 L) ships about six weeks sooner than a 250 ml or 330 ml carton. Build the freight time into the launch date you agree with US retailers and distributors.
